Silent Struggles: Mental Health in Children and Families
Silent Struggles: Mental Health in Children and Families
Mental health is a critical yet often overlooked aspect of childhood development. In South Africa, many children face immense psychological stress due to poverty, loss, violence, and instability at home. These challenges, if left unaddressed, can have long-term effects on their well-being, education, and future prospects. At Starfish Greathearts Foundation, we work alongside our Partners to ensure that vulnerable children receive the support they need through referrals to mental health services, education programs, and community engagement initiatives.

The Growing Mental Health Crisis Among Children
The statistics on child and adolescent mental health in South Africa paint a worrying picture:
- Prevalence of Mental Health Disorders: More than 13% of adolescents aged 10–19 live with a diagnosed mental disorder. PubMed Central+2UNICEF+2Africa Check+2
- Early Onset of Mental Health Disorders: Research indicates that 50% of mental health conditions start by age 14, with many cases undetected and untreated. Discovery
- Exposure to Trauma: Studies have found that 44.1% and 40.2% of South African youth (ages 14–24) have experienced depression and anxiety, respectively, with 25% reporting current suicidal thoughts. Wikipedia
Despite these staggering numbers, mental health services for children remain scarce and underfunded. Stigma and lack of awareness prevent many families from seeking help, leaving children to suffer in silence.

How Starfish and Our Partners Are Making a Difference
Case Study: Khumo’s Journey to Healing
Khumo, a 6-year-old girl, lost her father suddenly and was left in the care of her grandmother, Mama Thandiwe. Over time, Naledi became withdrawn, lost interest in school, and stopped engaging with friends. Concerned, Mama Thandiwe reached out to one of our Partners, who recognised the signs of unresolved grief and trauma.
Naledi was referred to a child psychologist, where she received play therapy to help her process her emotions. Mama Thandiwe also attended workshops on supporting children through grief. With time and a strong support system, Khumo regained her confidence, returned to school, and reconnected with her peers.
Khumo’s story is a reminder that early intervention and community support can change a child's life.
