We provide life-changing care and support to vulnerable orphans, children and young people.
This is the heartwarming story of Themba, a bright and spirited child living in one of the communities we serve. Themba's carer could not afford a school uniform. In South Africa, a child is not permitted to attend school without a uniform and when a child's uniform is torn or tattered they are often teased and bullied by the other children. Starfish gave Themba a brand new uniform and he is now able to attend school walking tall.
Mpilo and her little brother, Bongani, live with their ailing mother. Theirs is one of the poorest households in an indigent community, with a total income of $58.55 per month received from two Child Support government grants. There are no work opportunities in this remote village, so Mpilo’s Mom sought the help of a local Starfish Program for her children, which helps them to receive health, educational, and material support in the form of food parcels and school uniforms.
Thandazile, a resilient 7-year-old girl, was abandoned by her mother at birth and taken in by her grandmother. Despite challenging circumstances, her grandmother was determined to provide a bright future for Thandazile. Starfish stepped in to help enroll Thandazile in school and provided her with warm nutritious meals. A dedicated social worker also helped her obtain her long-awaited birth certificate, allowing them to apply for a government grant to cover some of her essential living expenses. Thandazile's life has taken a remarkable turn, she is more cheerful and is blossoming at school.
