Guiding the Journey to a Brighter Future

For 25 years, Starfish Greathearts Foundation has been walking alongside vulnerable children and families across South Africa, helping create pathways to brighter futures.

We serve communities in 8 South African provinces (Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West, Northern Cape, and Western Cape), reaching children in every province except the Free State.

Since our founding in 2001, we have supported more than 508,000 children through our 4 interlocking pillars: Education, Nutrition, Healthcare, and Social Welfare. These pillars work together to ensure children not only survive, but truly thrive — with access to quality learning environments, daily nutritious meals, essential health services, and the stability of community-based care and protection.

Today, we partner with and support 25 schools and have worked alongside multiple community-based organizations, equipping local leaders and caregivers with the tools and resources needed to care for children holistically and sustainably.

You Lit the Way in 2025

In 2025, your generosity helped expand Starfish’s reach across eight provinces in South Africa, strengthening 25 partner schools and supporting thousands of children through Education, Nutrition, Healthcare, and Social Welfare. From daily nutritious meals to essential health screenings and safe, supportive learning environments, children received the stability and care they needed to thrive. This year, we continued partnering with local leaders and community-based organizations to deepen impact and ensure more children have the opportunity to step confidently into brighter futures...because of you!

Health

Through our Wellness Wagons 23,664 children received care and support. Mobile health units that bring essential services directly to schools and underserved communities. From health screenings and vision and hearing checks to referrals and follow-up care, these services ensure that preventable issues do not become lifelong barriers. By meeting children where they are, the Wellness Wagons remove obstacles to learning and help every child stay healthy, present, and ready to thrive.

Nutrition

Children in Starfish-supported schools received 248,139 nutritious meals, often the only reliable meal of their day. These meals do more than satisfy hunger; they fuel concentration, strengthen growing bodies, and give children the energy they need to learn, play, and participate fully in school. By ensuring consistent access to nourishing food, we remove one of the greatest barriers to education and help children focus on what matters most — building brighter futures.

Education

737 young children attended Starfish-supported Early Childhood Development centers. These children are nurtured in safe, stimulating environments where they build foundational literacy and numeracy skills, develop social and emotional confidence, and receive daily nutritious meals. Through structured learning, play-based activities, and caring teachers, they gain the strong start they need to thrive in primary school and beyond.

Looking Ahead: 2026 & Beyond

The Next Chapter of the Journey

Youth Development

Our expanded Youth Development programs will strengthen leadership, resilience, and career exploration for adolescents preparing for life beyond school. We are equipping students with the vision and skills they need to step confidently into adulthood.

Entrepeneurship

Starfish will introduce Entrepreneurship initiatives that equip older students with practical skills, financial literacy, and mentorship. By fostering innovation and confidence, we are helping young people create opportunities for themselves and their communities.

Sustainability

We are deepening sustainability by strengthening community-based organizations and expanding school and community food gardens. By building financial resilience and growing fresh produce locally, we are ensuring long-term impact that is sustained by the communities themselves.

Safety for Lindiwe

Lindiwe is growing up in a community where young girls must learn to be alert far too soon. The risks around her have not disappeared, but through the watchful care of her school, trusted mentors, and community partners, she has people who look out for her and remind her of her worth. In a place where darkness still exists, that steady presence becomes a light, helping Lindiwe and girls like her walk forward with greater strength and hope.

From Silence to Soaring

For years, Ayanda strained to hear in class, falling behind through no fault of her own. After a Wellness Wagon screening identified her hearing challenge, she received support, and her world became clearer. Now, she’s stepping confidently toward a brighter future.
