In South Africa:

• Girls are more likely to drop out of school before completing secondary education.
  Studies show that around 30% of girls drop out before finishing secondary school—compared to 27% of boys. (Sources)
  
• Nearly half (48%) of South Africans say violence against women and girls is very or somewhat common in their communities.
  This reflects deep-rooted norms that leave girls—especially adolescents—vulnerable to harm. (Afrobarometer)

• South Africa has one of the highest rates of femicide globally, with 5,578 women and 1,656 children murdered in the year ending March 2024. The Guardian

A Story of Courage: Ayanda’s Rise

At just 12 years old, Ayanda from Mpumalanga frequently missed school. Her family could not afford sanitary pads, and she felt embarrassed and isolated. Through a Starfish-supported programme, Ayanda received dignity packs, confidence-building workshops, and mentorship.

Today, she is back in class—speaking up in group discussions and mentoring younger girls in her village. She dreams of becoming a social worker so she can help others overcome the same challenges she faced.
